What is an Ambassador

by Ryan James

The primary mission of The Kirkland Chamber of Commerce’s Ambassadors program is the retention of existing Kirkland Chamber Members, enlistment of new members, and to serve as goodwill representatives of the chamber at a variety of functions.

This energetic group helps maintain contact with other Chamber members while promoting the Kirkland Chamber of Commerce and its purpose.

Ambassadors attend Chamber functions and serve as greeters at Chamber events such as monthly Business After Hours, Luncheons, ribbon cuttings and grand openings, and other Chamber events.  Ambassadors are the first contact that new members have upon joining The Kirkland Chamber of Commerce.

I moved to Kirkland in January 1989 and shortly thereafter joined Columbia Athletic Club (CAC) as their Membership Director when they asked if I would represent the Club in the local Chamber.  Being new to the area, I thought it sounded like a great way to meet people, and give the Club more exposure in the community.  Here we are some 28 years later, and I have to say that this was one of the best things I could have done for my personal growth and development, as well as the Club’s.

My whole approach to networking changed after becoming an Ambassador.  Instead of being all about me and my business, my focus shifted on meeting the new members, learning about their businesses, and trying to make good connections for them.  I also made the commitment and got involved!  I attended as many regular monthly events as I could, served on different committees, and volunteered when needed.

Today, Columbia Athletic Club is proudly celebrating 36 years of ‘Inspiring Healthier Lives’, is Kirkland’s largest full service athletic club, and has been voted the 2017 Best Indoor Sports/Recreation Center AND Best Fitness Center in the Kirkland Reporter’s  Best of Kirkland readers’ poll.  I truly believe our involvement in the Chamber gives us better exposure in the community and is a factor in our continued growth.

As for me, I am grateful for the encouragement of the CAC owner, and Chamber staff, and proud to have been recognized as Chamber Member of the Year in 2003 and Community Service Award recipient in 2016.  It reminds me of my favorite Zig Ziglar quote:  “You can get everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”  And to think, it all started by joining the Ambassadors Committee.
